Why every woman should try performing at least once!

There’s a quiet power in stepping onto a stage for the first time.

The moment you hear the music and feel the spotlight is like no other. And here at BAW Dance, we’ve seen it happen again and again: women transforming right before our eyes.

If you’ve never performed before, we’re here to tell you exactly why you should.

1. Try Performing and Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

According to a study by Crystal Tomaszewski, participating in performance-based activities significantly boosts self-esteem, especially in women who identify as shy or reserved, or with psychological and physiological traumas.

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being present.

Even if your hands shake or your choreography isn’t flawless, performing reminds you that confidence is built in action.

2. You Don’t Need Experience. You Need Curiosity.

The most common misconception we see is: 'I have never danced before, I'm not ready to be on the stage!', or 'I'm too scared to try performing in front of a crowd'.

You don’t need to have danced for years or have experience commanding entire theatres.

Many of our first-time performers come from our 10-week beginner-friendly courses in Belly Dance, Classic Burlesque, and Sensual Floorwork.

These courses are crafted not just to build technique, but to offer a safe launchpad into performing with an audience that is primarily made up of the friends and family of our performers. Everyone is there to cheer you on and support you, even if you make mistakes!

3. Reclaim Your Narrative, Your Way

All creative self-expression is linked to lower stress, greater self-worth, and higher levels of joy.

Likewise with dancing, when you perform, you get to control the story you tell. The stage becomes a blank canvas where you can paint through movement and embody sensuality, power, sadness, or playfulness.

Our blog on How to Elevate Your Dance Storytelling in 15 Steps dives deep into this process of self-creation.

4. The Community Has Your Back

We don’t do mean girls. We don’t do judgment. We do cheers from the front row, tight backstage hugs, and sharing safety pins and red lipstick.

We also understand the courage it takes to step on stage, and the commitment it took for you to be able to learn, overcome your fears and claim your light. Owning your story and sharing it deserves to be celebrated.

5. It Might Be the Start of Something Big

Many of our performers go on to do:

• More courses

• Perform in other events across London & the UK

• Create their own acts and personas

• Even teach or mentor others!

Who knows? This could be the first step to finding your voice, your power, or even your passion. Our blog From Studio to Stage explains all the steps and processes involved when students perform for the first time on stage, so you can view for yourself how other women have experienced it.

Ready to Try?

You don’t need to feel 100% ready. You just need to be willing.
